Woodcarving Workshop in Historic Bhaktapur

Woodcarvings are everywhere in Bhaktapur. Since the early Licchavi period (300-789 AD), the carvings are present everywhere in the Nepal architecture. Woodcarving is specially a Newari art and Bhaktapur is one of the most famous places for woodcarving. In the Bhaktapur district alone there are some 500 active wood crafters.
It is therefore that this workshop takes place in the heart of the woodcarving business, Bhaktapur.

The workshop itself is organized in a real and active operating woodcarving business. You will learn the skills from a master wood crafter him/herself.

At the start of the workshop you will be given an introduction into woodcarving and the different techniques and instruments used. After this introduction the carving master will demonstrate the use of the different instruments and will guide in the correct use. Once you have understood the basics you will start working on your own wood craft. Depending on whether you choose the one day or two day workshop you will either carve your own name or create the "om".

Creating your own souvenir will be a remarkable memory to this wonderful day.

During the day a simple Nepali meal will be provided in the house of an artisanís family.

If you choose for the two day workshop you will be able to stay overnight with the woodcarver's family. Breakfast and Dinner will be included. This option also allows for you to create your own "Om"
